Coin Bank History

Piggy Coin Bank History

Coin banks originated from pygg banks.  Pygg was orange clay used in Europe during the middle ages to make household jars and pots. Some times a pygg jar would be used to save coins. By the 18th century the bank jars became known as piggy banks and were shaped like pigs.

Craftsmen then began using other materials to create animal coin banks to hold coins of the Realm.

At the start of each growing season the Duke WooDen Toys gave each new 12 year old a wooden animal coin bank. The 12 year old children were told that at the end of the growing season the child that had saved the most gold Ducats (coins of the Realm) in his or her wooden coin bank would receive a toy box full of new handcrafted wooden toys, including the educational wooden toys developed by Prince GaMes and Princess WidGet.

Each animal coin bank had unique shapes, based on the many animals in the Dukedom. The children of the Dukedom had fun saving their Ducat coins in the unique animal shaped wooden coin banks.

MUFSTUF wooden toy store has their wooden coin banks made in USA by American Craftsmen.
